(05-10-2011) ATLANTA, GA – Raymond Commisso's motivation for winning the Get Screened America Pro Mod Series race at this weekend's Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals go far beyond moving up in the points, winning a trophy, or defending the home turf of his team, R2B2 Racing.

"It was a year ago this weekend that my dad passed away," Commisso said. "So I'm going to be racing for Dad."

Micke Gullqvist won the Atlanta race last year filling in for Commisso. Now, the Toronto-based racer is hoping there's more Georgia magic in his supercharged ProCare Rx Camaro.

Raymond Commisso"We're going to focus on qualifying well and going rounds," Commisso said. "One step at a time. That's how Micke got it done last year and it's a good formula for success. Hopefully, we all do that. It would be great if two R2B2 Racing cars meet in the final."

Team owner/driver Roger Burgess, currently a lofty fourth in the championship points, thinks one of his team cars is due for a deep run through eliminations.

"Our cars have shown they can be quick," Burgess said. "We've just not had the lucky break it seems to take to make it through four rounds.

"Atlanta Dragway was a good place for us last year, and I don't expect it to be different this time around. It's home for us and we'll have all the support a team could ever ask for so we need to be ready to show everyone a good time."

Burgess and his turbocharged '53 ProCare Rx Corvette hope to keep points leader Khalid Balooshi in range. Teammates Commisso and Brad Personett, who has been battling parts issues for the last few races, are tied for seventh in the standings and are equally anxious to gain ground on Balooshi, who has been near-perfect in the first three races of the Pro Mod season.

Before racing gets underway Friday, R2B2 Racing will have a free open house at its Duluth, Ga., shop from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday. Commisso said he's as excited about that event as he is about racing.

"I can't wait to meet all the fans from Atlanta and hang out with my race team," Commisso said. "Every time I go to the shop, I'm like a kid in a candy store with all the different custom cars inside. That place is just incredible."

Get Screened America Pro Mod Series racing gets under way Friday at 3:15 p.m. with two qualifying rounds. There will be one more qualifier on Saturday before eliminations start at 3:15 p.m. The champion of the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals will be crowned on Sunday afternoon.

ADRL Feature Story: Decerbo Proving He Belongs With The Big Boys In Pro Nitrous
(4-28-2011) HAWK POINT, MO –John Decerbo committed to a full Pro Nitrous season for 2011 in the American Drag Racing League (ADRL) almost immediately after the 2010 season ended.

It hasn’t taken long for Decerbo to prove he belongs among the top names in the division during the new year.

Spurred by a strong turnaround at the end of last season, Decerbo put together a strong showing at the Safety-Kleen Spring Drags II two weeks ago at Palm Beach International Raceway.

The Ohio native advanced to the semifinals, and it took a round-best 3.83 from eventual champion Mike Castellana to end his impressive night.

John DeCerbo“We’re absolutely pleased,” Decerbo said. “We’re running a new engine program and we’re trying to learn everything right now.

“The car is really coming along and getting fast. It’s exciting; we’re really getting a handle on it.”

Even in defeat, Decerbo spoke excitedly in his pits moments after his race with Castellana.

After all, there wasn’t much shame in going 3.86 while falling to one of the top names in Pro Nitrous on a day where he proved to be unbeatable.

“We knew we had to be ready for Mike. He’s just killer on the light, but we’ll learn from this,” Decerbo said.

Decerbo and his team have proven to be quick-learners.

A year ago, Decerbo debuted his Tim McAmis Race Cars-built ultra-lightweight ’68 Camaro, which included numerous innovative features that made it one of the lightest cars in the class.

But after Decerbo became the first Pro Nitrous driver to make a 3-second run with an automatic, not much went right until late in the season.

It took a September test session to right the ship, but things have picked up considerably since then.

Decerbo went 3.91 at the World Finals in October at Texas Motorplex and has taken it up another notch in 2011.

At PBIR, Decerbo qualified No. 6 in a loaded field, going 3.87 at 189 miles per hour.

He beat Jim Laurita in the first round and then pulled off one of the biggest wins of the weekend in the quarterfinals.

Khalid Al-Balooshi had just one round loss in both the Arabian Drag Racing League and ADRL in 2011, winning the first ADRL event in March before meeting up with Decerbo in a second-round matchup.

But Decerbo eagerly accepted the challenge and went 3.86 at 189 mph to pull off the upset.

That was reason enough for Decerbo to be excited.

John DeCerbo“We’ve got the right people in the places and we’ve got good quality stuff on this car. It’s all coming together,” Decerbo said. “We’ve surrounded ourselves with a good group of guys and we’re real happy to be doing this well.

“We’re going to keep on coming and keep challenging everyone in the class.”

The right pieces include an engine from Reher-Morrison and help from Speedtech, and the right people includes a big assist from crew chief Tom Benzenoffer.

He was unable to attend the Florida race, but that didn’t stop him from lending a helping hand.

“He read all the computer information from his home. He was just trying to help out and did an incredible job,” Decerbo said.

The same can be said for Decerbo, who continues to make progress in a class that doesn’t allow for many mishaps.

But Decerbo thinks this is just the start of something special in 2011.

“We just need to get in some more testing,” Decerbo said. “Everything’s running well and we’re just looking forward.”

Mike Knowles(4-27-2011) BAYTOWN, TX – Since veteran drag racer and tuner Al Billes took the reigns as Crew Chief for Mike Knowles’ Pro Modified team, the Grand Junction, Colorado based team has been continually hard at work, both on and off the track.

Knowles has a new 6,000 sq ft facility being built to house his race operation. Knowles, his Crew Chief, Al Billes, and crew have been very busy not only sorting out the teams new Tim McAmis Camaro but also assisting with the layout of the new home of Mike Knowles Racing.

“Al is a very hands on guy. He doesn’t sit back while the crew does the work. He’s in there too. He gets involved in all parts of the team,” said team owner/driver, Mike Knowles.

Prior to the O’Reilly Auto Parts Spring Nationals this weekend in Houston Texas the team will make a scheduled stop in Crandall, TX for some pre-race testing.

“We have to find some consistency with the car and the more laps we get in the better. I’m confident we are heading in the right direction with what we have planned,” said Knowles.

Mike Knowles and the other Get Screened America Pro Mod Challenge competitors will be afforded three shots at making it into the 16 field for eliminations. Round one of qualifying will be held Friday, April 29 at 1:00 PM. The second round will be later that same day at 4:30 PM. The final qualifying attempt will be Saturday at 12:45 AM. The first round of eliminations will be held later that same day at 3:15 PM. Final eliminations will run in conjunction with Sunday’s professional eliminations.

(4-27-2011) BAYTOWN, TX – The phrase “History tends to repeat itself” is one not only limited to the textbooks and notepads found in schools. In fact, the phrase can be seen in the pits and on the track of many NHRA Drag Races around the country.

Whether it’s the wave of successful wins a driver can have in one season, a string of No. 1 qualifiers that occur in back-to-back races, or even a repeat world championship, history can have a tendency to repeat itself on the dragstrip. As the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing series returns to Royal Purple Raceway, April 29-May 1, for the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals, it’s that exact phrase that driver Danny Rowe hopes to be uttering in Winner’s Circle on Sunday.

Danny RoweJust one year ago Rowe claimed his first win in the newly created series when he held off fan favorite Melanie Troxel in the final round. The win moved Rowe all the way up to the fourth spot in the point standings and helped give him the momentum he needed to finish second overall by season’s end.

Now, just one year later, Rowe is sitting in a prime spot to take the point standings for the first time in his career. In the first two races of the season, Rowe has collected a runner-up finish in Gainesville and a semifinal round finish in Las Vegas. He currently sits third in the point standings, just 57 points behind first place driver Khalid Balooshi. Is this a chance for history to be repeated for Rowe?

“It would be huge to win again there,” Rowe said. “To have that little bit of momentum and consistency on our side would be huge, especially in this class.”

Though a repeat win in Houston is the first and foremost thing on Rowe’s mind entering this weekend’s event, the thought of winning the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod world championship in just its second year in existence is never too far behind.

“Every point counts in this class,” Rowe said. “We’re looking for everything that we can get. The way you look at the championship is by looking at today. At where you are right now. We’re really focused on what we’re going to do in Houston and if we can do that at every race and have that consistency, hopefully we will be on the right side of the points standings at the end of the season.”

But Rowe knows that with so many impressive cars and drivers in the series this season, and the hot summer months just around the corner, everyone has a chance to grab that world title.

“Obviously anyone in the top 10 is in the game deep,” Rowe said, referring to the point standings. “It’s anybody’s race right now. The points difference between winning a race and finishing runner up is such a huge swing, so all it takes is a race win to really change the outcome in the standings. I think at this point in the season, it really is anybody’s race.”

Rowe will have his hands full as the series heads to the Houston area. Pro Mod points leader Balooshi has swept the first two events of the season in his Speedtech ’68 Camaro, and defending world champion Von Smith is always a top contender in the series.

Ed Burnley(4-22-2011) BENSON, NC - After a very intensive testing session at Coastal Plains last Friday, Ed Burnley knew he had something special going on. The 67 Camaro built by Ed Burnley Race Cars and powered by an 864 Fulton power plant was on course in the first race of the new year with the EOPM. Right out of the water box the sleek Red Camaro ran a 3.984. Then come back and ran a 3.946 on the second round of qualifying. “That car looked like it was it was shot out of a cannon, straight and true, right down the track,” said a EOPM staff member.

A true professional Ed Burnley is what the EOPM is all about. Ed Burnley’s team is going to try to make all of the EOPM races, and run for the EOPM Championship!! Ed Burnley Race Cars builds complete PROMOD Race Cars from start to finish, they also build Custom stainless steel headers for all Pro Cars.

“We are right where we want to be, to be able to compete on this level is very satisfying,” said Burnley. Qualifying for one of these races is truly something special, with a bump-spot of 4.03, Burnley definitely has to be on his game. “I would like to thank my partner Billy Smith, and my crew Bobby Holtzner and Jeff Swain, for all they do for our race team!” said Burnley.

(4-19-11) Pleasanton, CA – The Goodguys Racing team subscribes whole heartedly to the old adage “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” After a tumultuous 9-month rebuilding process following a freak accident last September, the team’s Pro Mod ’69 Camaro “Pure Hell 2” driven by Marc Meadors made its 2011 debut last weekend at the PSCA-K & N Filters “Racin’ 4 Jason” Nationals at the Strip @ Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The team’s new look and new engine combination paid immediate dividends!

GGRAfter sitting out the first two Pro Street qualifying sessions with a transmission gremlin, Pure Hell2 made its one and only qualifying run count in the “last chance” session, clicking off an effortless 6.09 @ 237mph to land in the #2 spot on the eliminations ladder. The run earned the team a first round-bye in Sunday’s eliminations but Meadors legged out a 6.08 @ 236 on the solo run to gather as much data as possible. A second round blast of 6.09 @ 237mph was followed by a 6.12 @ 238 in the 3rd elimination round. An untimely and undiagnosed oil leak kept the team on the sidelines and out of their semi final matchup with Mike Maggio.

The new found performance was just what the team was looking for. “It was a long off season for this team” said owner/driver Marc Meadors. “We took the car to Infineon Raceway early last week for our initial test runs with the new combination and ran 6.01 @ 187mph with the ‘chutes out at 1,000ft right off the trailer, so we knew right away we had a car that can win races this season. We’re continuing to gel as a team and gain confidence. Pure Hell2 is gonna be a handful this year. We’re going to test some more before our next race in Boise, Idaho June 24, 25 & 26.

I couldn’t be out here doing this without the help of the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association, Red Line Oil, Darren Mayer of DMPE, Tim McAmis Race Cars, Bradco Engineering, Bunker Race Cars and of course my crew guys, Jason Bunker, Jeff Accacian, Billy Ferreira and Cole Ruchenet for all the hours and all the work they put in.”

(4-13-11) PLEASANTON, CA – The Goodguys Racing Pro Mod ’69 Camaro driven by Marc Meadors has a new look and a whole new attitude heading into the 2011 season. Following a major setback last fall in Sacramento when a freak accident in the staging lanes destroyed the car and injured Marc’s young son, the team has regrouped, reloaded and repainted the car. Better yet, 8 year old Grant Meadors is doing well, while still recovering from his injuries and is ready to watch his dad kick asphalt this year.

Goodguys RacingThose familiar with Northern California drag racing history will instantly recognize the Camaro’s new paint scheme. In honor of long time family friend and Drag Racing Hall of Fame inductee Rich Guasco, the Goodguys Racing Camaro sports the famed “Pure Hell” flames and candy burgundy hues that made the Fuel Altered a worldwide sensation. The scheme matches the famous bantam roadster right down the “Pure Hell” lettering and Guasco couldn’t be happier or more proud to see his colors heading into the Pro Mod Wars.

The engine combination has changed dramatically to match the car’s new look. A screw-type supercharger has been bolted to the potent 451 cubic inch Brand Anderson hemi. A Bruno drive and Bradco torque converter insures the new drive train can handle all that power. The goal is to run consistent 5-sercond passes at speeds over 240mph.

“We want to run for the championship in any Pro Mod series we can this year,” Meadors said. “We’ve got the crew, the experience and now we’ve got all the best parts so we’re confident we can run right there with the best this season.”

A big shout out to all the folks that have helped the Goodguys Racing Team rebound…

(4-11-11) PLEASANTON, CA – After a very succesful 1st weekend testing, we would like to thank each and every one of you for the comments, "likes", texts and phone calls. We couldnt have had a better 1st time back out. It was a long 6 months, but well worth the wait. We ran into some "new car blues" and lost some testing today, but it allowed us to get the car maintananced and buttoned up for this coming weekend. Were all pretty excited at the possibilities with the hot rod, and were off to a good start. Not too shabby for receiveing the car Thursday of this week!

(4-1-11) LAS VEGAS, NV – Fresh off a final round appearance at the season-opener in Gainesville, Florida a few weeks ago, Danny Rowe heads into the second stop on the Get Screened America NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series tour with a full head of steam.

Danny Rowe“We really had a tremendous weekend at the Gatornationals,” says Rowe, checking in via cell phone en route to the fabulous Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. “We knew we were in for a drag race against Balooshi in the final, and I was fired up, but we didn’t quite have enough to hang on for the win. We’re happy to hang around late on Sunday and be in the final though – earning those oh-so-valuable championship points – and we’re feeling good about Vegas, as well as the 2011 season as a whole.”

There’s little reason not to feel good for Danny Rowe and company as they burst onto the scene the season with their race program firing on all eight cylinders. Not only was Rowe a machine on the starting line, but crew chief Jimmy Rector had a tune-up in the Sterling Bridge ’68 Camaro that had everyone’s attention.

“I can’t say enough about this team,” continues Rowe. “I’m glad that we’re getting off to a good start, but our approach to these races rarely changes. We’ve got some stiff competition out here, so you can’t take anything for granted; every qualified team is capable of winning. We have to keep this pace and not settle for anything less than late-round appearances on Sundays.”

Though Pro Modified is known for its anything-can-happen nature, Rowe’s Sterling Bridge-backed supercharged Camaro looks like a sure-bet after the last event in Florida.

“After the rule change that was handed down over the offseason, Jimmy [Rector] worked around the clock to make sure we’d not be behind the eight-ball performance wise this year,” says Rowe. “We certainly had favorable conditions in Gainesville, but that applies to everyone – and this Sterling Bridge team was right in the thick of things. We’ve got a lot of racing left to do, but we can’t help but feel confident about our performance at this point.”

Another big outing at the series’ first of two visits to Las Vegas Motor Speedway would have Rowe better positioned early in the season than ever before, and that bodes well for what is sure to be a tightly contested championship battle.

Danny Rowe TMRC Camaro(3-14-11) GAINESVILLE, FL – Just like he had planned, Danny Rowe came out swinging in 2011, scoring a runner-up finish in the Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series season-opener at the 42nd Annual Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida.

Utilizing a combination of high-level performance and consistency, Rowe built on his second-place qualifying effort (5.855/250.27mph) by toppling some of the best Pro Modified has to offer in Scott Ray, Ed Hoover, and racing legend Rickie Smith, before facing Khalid Al-Balooshi in the final round on the historic Gainesville Raceway quarter-mile. Rowe left first with a .056-second reaction time and held the lead until almost half-track when Balooshi squeaked by to take the win and bring to an end a phenomenal weekend of Pro Mod Drag Racing.

“Wow, what a weekend,” says Rowe, climbing out of his car after the series’ first final round of 2011. “I’d be remiss if I didn’t admit that we’re a little disappointed, but I can’t deny that simply being in the final round here today – it’s a big deal for this team. We wanted to come out and make a statement early, and I think that’s exactly what we did.

“We talk about it a lot, but the competition out here is incredible,” Rowe continues. “You look at the number of low 5.90 and 5.80 runs in eliminations and it’s undeniable that Pro Mod Racing is as serious as ever. As always, we went into race day focused on consistency. We had to make good, fast runs to go rounds, and Jimmy [Rector, crew chief] provided me a hot rod that did just that.”

Rowe’s run to the final included a string of impressive runs, including a 5.913 and a 5.894 – both at nearly 250mph.

“I can’t say enough about this Sterling Bridge team,” says Rowe. “We worked hard this offseason and I believe it’s going to pay dividends all year long. This was a great way to welcome RCD Engineering to our amazing family of sponsors, and I’m looking forward to the next stop on the GSA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series tour already.”
