Goodguys Racing Team Back on Track This Weekend in Vegas
(02-15-2012) Pleasanton, CA - With the thrill and excitement of a brand new drag racing season upon us, the Goodguys Racing Team led by Marc Meadors and the “Pure Hell2” ’69 Camaro Pro Mod machine are locked, loaded and ready for a run at the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association series title. Outfitted with a trick new DMPE Mark II carbon injector and a top secret hi-end torque converter, the team is confident they can take the flaming ’69 Camaro into battle and eclipse last year’s second place points finish in WCOPMA action.
This weekend, the team will venture south from their Pleasanton, California home base to the PSCA Ford Racing “Record Breaker Nationals” at the Strip @ Las Vegas Motor Speedway to lock horns with the competition in the Pro Street division. Although not their primary racing circuit, it was at last fall’s PSCA Street Car Supernationals @ the Strip Meadors qualified #2 in a national field of the country’s best racers running 5.92 @ 246mph. In fact, every run the Pure Hell2 ’69 Camaro made at the Supernationals in November was a sub-six second effort. Meadors asserts “he’s out to avenge the quarter final red light that took me out. I could have easily won that race” he grinned.
Joining his father on track this weekend will be 9 year old Grant Meadors, who makes his competition debut in the PSCA’s Junior Dragster division. The third generation racer will be behind the butterfly of his new alcohol powered Mike Boss-built Junior Dragster.
“We’re ready for the family weekend of competition,” said the elder Meadors. “It’s been a good winter back in the shop. We’re excited about the new parts and pieces on the car and see no reason why we can’t squeeze the 5.70 zone on a routine basis provided with optimum conditions. And little Grant is really stoked to be racing in his first-ever event. No matter the outcome, it will be good to be back on track after a long winter break.”

(10-31-2011) LONG ISLAND, NY - David Hance ran his first ever 5 second pass at his Shakedown at E'town event on Sunday, October 9. In the second round, Dave beat # 2 qualifier Pete Farber and ran a 5.92 at 251 mph. He made it to the semis where mechanical issues sidelined him. "This is the best we have run at Shakedown in a long time and I am just proud to do it here in front of my family, friends and this crowd," Hance said.
At Maryland International Raceway the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association hosted the 1320 Pro Mod Warrior Series Supercharger Showdown on October 21 & 22. While competing in the Turbo/Blown class, Hance reset the track speed record to 249 while running 5.95 and 5.96.
The best was yet to come for David, who while testing at MIR for the NEOPMA Rumble in the Park at Virginia Motorsports Park on Friday, ran consistent 5 second runs including his personal best 5.79 at 254 mph. The first two passes right out of the trailer were 5.93 at 249 mph and 5.88 at 253 mph. Unfortunately, the test session rained out before David was able to make another pass. "I am so excited to have these runs, my team has worked so hard this year, and to be able to run these times is just incredible," said Hance.
(10-26-2011) LAGUNA HILLS, CA – Danny Rowe’s position going into the final race of the season is one that would have stats freaks and number crunchers running wild.
That’s because the Get Screened America NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series championship will once again be decided on The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and it’s a game of chance that could go either way for Rowe, who currently sits second in the standings, 55 points behind leader Khalid Balooshi. Should Balooshi qualify and win the opening round, Rowe will have to accept second-place for the second straight season. If Balooshi loses in round one, however, Rowe could move ahead of him in the standings and take the title with an event win.
Reminded of the scenario and its potential outcomes, Rowe remains even-keeled, underlining the fact that he’s had a tremendous season, and too many variables exist to get too concerned with what might possibly happen in Vegas.
“Jimmy [Rector, crew chief] and the whole crew have given me a great car all season long,” says Rowe. “We’ve had a consistent program all season long, and we can’t alter our approach headed into this weekend. As always, we just have to take it one step at a time, and that first step is to qualify well. After that we’ll worry about eliminations.
“That’s not to say we aren’t going into this weekend with the attitude that we need to win this race,” he continues. “We most certainly are. But we can’t worry about what other teams are going to do. We can only control what we do, and as for the points – we’re just going to let them land where they land.”
This weekend’s Big O Tires NHRA Nationals, undoubtedly, is an X factor type of race for Rowe with the ability to turn a good year into a great one, but there is no way to predict the outcome.
“It’s a crapshoot out here,” says Rowe. “You just never know what is going to happen, and we’ve seen that anything can and will. We know we have a car that is capable of doing what needs to be done. We’re going to run our own race in Vegas, and hope that luck is on our side this time around.”
(10-24-2011) MECHANICSVILLE, MD – The Northeast Outlaw Pro Mods fourth “Extreme” Event” of the season at MIR October 21st and 22nd was a huge success with huge crowds, great weather and over 33 Pro Mods contesting sixteen qualifying positions in each of the two classes. Turbo cars are on the rise in the series with 6 of the 17 cars in the Blower/Turbo class running turbo’s.
In the cool October weather, with track temperatures at times as low as 60 degrees, which means nothing when Royce Miller and the MIR staff are prepping the track, as the track was perfect all weekend. Taking the pole position on the Blower/Turbo side was Eric Latino all the way from Canada in his beautiful G-Force built 1968 Camaro with a blistering 5.89 ET at 245.32 MPH. Steve King also ran thru the field to the finals qualifying number 2, defeating Barney Squires in round one, 7.43 to a losing 10.75, Larry Higginbottham in second round 9.55 to a no time as Larry hurt engine, Dave Hance in round three 6.04 to a losing but close 6.09.
Final round was uncontested as Steve King hurt his engine on the pass versus Dave Hance and could not make the call, with the win going to Tim O’Hare
This was an exciting race for all involved, especially 2nd round in the Blower Turbo class with fast tight racing and 4 Five second side by side races, Eric Latino 5.938/244.65 to a Holeshot victory 5.957/245.32 to Steve Drummond, and Bill Lutz 5.998/246.44 to a winning 5.961/245.58 by Dave Hance.

(9-18-2011) JULIAN, NC- September 1 fell on a Thursday and guess what happened? Yep, it’s Big Dog Shootout time again. All the attention, so far, this year has been on the Jerry Williams owned, Todd Howard driven Ford Mustang. Mr. Howard, unless he doesn’t show up in October, will most likely be the champion for 2011 by virtue of his three wins and consistent finishes. But I am getting too far ahead of myself.
Qualifying ended up with surprise entrant, Edward Wilson, in a TM Willys nitrous car, being the No. 1 qualifier at a 3.968. Two was Tutterow, with third going to the other Todd, Howard at a 4.025. Fourth was the Camaro of Darrin Hoyle with 5th going to last month’s runner up, Matt
Giangrande. Sixth was last year’s champ, Danny Perry , seventh to Bobby Baucom and eighth to Travis Harvey.
The field ran from a low of 3.968 to 4.080. Due to breakage, the first two alternates made the first round call when Baucom and Perry couldn’t make the call, putting Gilmer Hinshaw and Jason Harris in the field.
First round winners were Todd H. over Jason Harris, Todd T. over Gilmer Hinshaw , Edward Wilson over Travis Harvey and Darrin Hoyle over Matt Giangrande. Only Tutterow ran in the three’s but Todd Howard ran the big MPH at 188.20.
The semi’s saw the Al Anabi Camaro of Tutterow defeat Todd Howard with a 3.936 to a 3.989.
Darrin Hoyle defeated Edward Wilson 4.02 to a quicker but later 4.01 for Wilson.
The finals were super close with Todd Tutterow leaving on a .088 light going 3.91, for low et of the event to a much quicker leaving .002 of Hoyle with a losing et of 4.11.
(09-15-11) GRAND JUNCTION, CO – Colorado business man, Mike Knowles, announced today that NHRA Pro Modified Turbo Pioneer, Brad Personett, has agreed to join forces with Knowles for the rest of the season.
“I’ve always like Brad and his the way he races. He’s willing to do the hard work. He and his family have worked very hard on their combination. It’s really impressive all the hard work they’ve put in over the years. It takes smart dedicated people to do what they’ve done and that’s why I’m happy to have the Personett’s on my team,” said Mike Knowles.
While the duo run two different forms of mechanical supercharging, they are able to share information on suspension and clutch set ups as well as track conditions.
“Having a teammate to share data with is a plus; no matter what power adder they run. Getting an honest opinion about set ups and track conditions sometimes is invaluable. Sometimes you just need to have open lines of communications to make a light go on and help you figure something out. I’m so pleased to be able to have this type of relationship with Mike and his crew,” said Brad Personett.
The first race for the new teammates will be this weekend's 4th Annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals held from September 16th-18th at zMax Dragway in Concord, North Carolina, just outside of Charlotte.
(08-25-2011) HAWK POINT, MO - At the end of 2010, Dan Devore and Kaylee Taylor Van Wyk of Jasper County Speed Shop contacted Tim McAmis Race Cars and Performance Parts to inquire about a new project for their race team. After some consultation with sales representative and project manager Billy Johnston, Dan and Kaylee decided a V4 1968 Camaro would be a perfect fit for their blown alcohol HEMI power plant.
Jasper County Speed Shop would enlist TMRC to construct the Camaro into a full roller and complete the project in-house with instructions, kits and components from Tim McAmis Performance Parts. To start the process a state of the art TMRC chassis was configured followed by mounting of the fiberglass V4 body. The TMRC fabrication shop then produced a sheet metal floater rear end housing to be installed in the car. To ensure the proper engine and transmission location were achieved, TMRC attached all of the brackets and mounting plates, so that when the time came for the Jasper County crew to install their HEMI and LencoDrive, the process would be seamless. To wrap up production, the TMRC fabrication department added rockers and carbon fiber products such as the V4 wing, wheel tubs, and rear bumper fillers.
With fabrication complete, Dan and Kaylee once again looked to Billy Johnston for guidance in purchasing additional components needed for the race car. They decided to use Strange Engineering inner components for their rear-end along with Penske Racing Shocks. Weld Alumastar Pro Beadlocks would be wrapped in Hoosier rear tires, then mounted and balanced along with a set of American Racing Trakstars for the front. The TMRC assembly team quickly installed all of the components along with a prepped rack and pinion and 4130 lower control arms. Dan and Kaylee got word that the first phase of their project was complete, and they immediately hit the road to pick up their new Camaro.
The car was brought back to Jasper County where they would spend the next few months fabricating, mounting tabs, fitting the interior, installing accessories and soon it would be off to the paint shop. The fiberglass V4 body was hit with a silver base coat, topped off with black SS stripes. After final wiring, plumbing and detailing, they were ready to hit the race track.
On August 20th, the Jasper County team left their Monroe, Iowa shop to make their shakedown runs at Eddyville Raceway Park. Following the unloading, a crowd gathered around the pit area with countless comments and compliments about the car. A planned early shut-off would make up the first pass in which Dan coasted to a 4.66 to get a feel for the car. Things went smoothly and Dan was ready to see the potential of their new hot rod. The next four passes got progressively quicker with a 4.58, 4.48, 4.28 and a 4.26 to wrap up the night. After a successful first outing, Dan commented, "This weekend we ran with a very mild tune up. Now it's time to turn it up and have some fun!"
Everyone at Tim McAmis Race Cars and Performance Parts would like to congratulate Dan, Kaylee and everyone at Jasper County Speed Shop on the completion and amazing job they did on finishing their new car. It was the Goodguys Racing Team’s first victory this season running the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Division.
The “Pure Hell2” Camaro, built as a tribute to Rich Guasco’s legendary Northern California “Pure Hell” fuel altered, was stout right from the start of qualifying. An off-the-trailer 6.176 @ 234.21 landed the Goodguys team in the #2 qualifying spot, trailing only class leader Bret Williamson. It was on Sunday however the team shined the brightest.
During the opening round of eliminations, with the corrected altitude at over 9000’, Meadors ran a 6.149 @ 234.78 to beat the ’57 Chevy Cameo of Dan Myers. We had a good feeling as soon as we ran the .17 off the trailer. It only got better from there. (7-26-2011) READING, PA -In 2010 team owner Brian Hard took delivery of his newly constructed V4-1968 Camaro by Tim McAmis Race Cars. Brian's son Tyler pilots the Hard Racing Camaro in the Top Sportsman category in the North East. Within a few laps and their modest engine combination, the team was running low four second eighth mile passes consistently and also picked up a 'Best Engineered' award in the recent ADRL Penske Inaugural Northeast Drags in Maple Grove, Pennsylvania.
Once the Hard Racing team experienced the quality, craftsmanship and customer service offered by Tim McAmis Race Cars, the decision to contact TMRC once again came easy after finalizing plans to add another car to their program in 2011. Brian called upon team member Kevin McCurdy to pilot the new Camaro which features a blown HEMI and torque converter combination.
Kevin, Brian, and the Hard Racing team plan to compete in the Pro Modified division for the remainder of 2011 along with Tyler continuing to make waves in the Top Sportsman ranks.

(7-22-2011) MOHNTON, PA - Having the inclusion of the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association a part of this amazing weekend of racing with the Super Chevy Show was more or less the icing on the cake to this event of worldwide status from publications to the internet. Bringing over 20 cars to the race in both nitrous assisted and Blown/Turbocharged is what most would consider being "The Show" mixed in with the most popular "Jet Cars and Wheel Standers" that are the common attraction. Now spectators and fans had the opportunity to see the real 1320 warriors of the sport taking on each other in a two classes, "Nitrous" alone and "Blown vs. Turbo". The Northeast Outlaw Pro Mods bring so much to the quarter mile of Maple Grove Raceway, this was a show inside a show with more horsepower than you could possibly handle. Fans jammed the stands with earplugs; children gazed at the huge burnouts asking parents questions with anticipated gazes awaiting what will happen next in this great family adventure into the senses of sound, smells and memories of Quarter Mile Drag Racing.
After two days of qualifying and 90 degree temps both days, with track temperatures reaching close to 130 degrees, taking the pole position on the Blower/Turbo side was Steve King in his Jeff Miller 1957 Belair with a 6.114ET at 230.41 MPH. This year’s VMP Super Chevy winner Tim O’Hare was close on his heels with a 6.127 and 3rd and not far behind was Andrew “Bam Bam” Parise with a 6.155. With the high track temps and heat index cars were struggling on the top end trying not to apply to much power to keep from hazing the tires 800 ft on.
On the Blower/Turbo side, Jim Bersani and Derrick Townes squared off, with Derrick turning on the win light, 6.806 to a 7.277, but Derrick clipped the centerline timing block and crossed the centerline, so Jim Bersani moves onto 2nd round. Next up was Larry Higgenbotham vs. Andrew Parise. Andrew takes the win 6.228 to a 17.759 and Larry got up on the tires and Andrew was long gone. Next was Tim O’Hare vs. the remaining non Chevy, Dwayne Wolfe. Dwayne made a valiant effort, left early and Tim takes the win 6.181 to a 6.485. Last up was Steve King vs. Jim Barker. Jim leaves early and gets loose and Steve goes down the groove to a round one low ET 6.174 to a 13.008.
Round two on the Blower/Turbo side paired Tim O’Hare vs. Andrew Parise. Tim was out of the gate first and takes the win with a great side by side race, 6.244 to a losing 6.260. There was some brief downtime for some clean up and next up was the final pair of the second round, Steve King vs. Jim Bersani. Both cut excellent lights with Jim at .003 and Steve at .007. Both were skating around going down track and Steve pedaled a few times for the win, 6.954 to a 8.013. As Steve went through the traps and chutes out, made a hard turn to the left, hit the retaining wall, and shot to the right hitting the right retaining wall before coming to a stop. Jim Bersani stopped next to Steve to lend assistance to fellow racer Steve. The Maple grove safety crew was on the scene in seconds and Steve was out of the car and was ok after being checked by the EMT.
With a weekend full of highs and lows, it’s great to know the dedication of the teams to each other, the Association, and to other teams. Fredy Scriba and Tim O’Hare donated their winnings to Steve King and Jeff Miller, good friends of theirs and knowing the tight racing budget that they are on, so that they can put the 68 Camaro back together to race. What a great unselfish gesture within the NEOPMA racing community.
Again, congratulations to Steve Kramer and Tim O’Hare and their Teams. Next event will be “Rumble at the Grove” August 13th at Maple Grove Raceway.
(7-20-2011) SONOMA, CA – The Goodguys Racing “Pure Hell2” ’69 Camaro Pro Mod will be on familiar turf this weekend as Goodguys President Marc Meadors looks to win his first event of the 2011 season on his home track at Infineon Raceway. A field of close to 20 West Coast Outlaw Pro Mods is expected at the Sonoma track this weekend during the NHRA Division 7 points meet presented by Korbel. It will be the deepest, most talented field of Pro Mods assembled so far this year out West and hope springs eternal in the Goodguys Racing camp following a sparkling test session here over Memorial Day weekend.
It was during that test session that Meadors logged the best run of his career, ripping off a 5.83 @ 247mph. His was the first “door car” to ever record a sub-six second run at the vaunted track. The team will need to repeat that performance and more this weekend if they’re to hoist the winner’s trophy Sunday afternoon. “This will be our toughest race since we formed the team in 2008,” Meadors said. “The competition in West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod is getting tougher with each event. With the sea-level conditions available at Infineon Raceway, the cars will fly this weekend. It wouldn’t surprise me if we see lot’s of 5 second runs. There is that much air here and these cars love air.”
The Goodguys team came close to bagging their second WCOPMA series win in June when they finished runner-up to the ’58 Corvette of Lee Smith during Firebird Raceway’s “Famous Fox Hunt” in Boise, Idaho. Meadors is confident they can threaten again this weekend. “If we can find the 5.80s, which I know we can, we have a good chance of putting together 3 or 4 good runs on Sunday. No matter what you race, if you can find fast, consistent performance, you can win. I like our chances in Sonoma.”
(7-18-2011) MARTIN, MI- Todd Tutterow in his Barwa/Al-Anabi Racing Pro Extreme 1968 Camaro had an outstanding performance at the Ford Drive One Summer Drags VII held at US 131 Dragway in Martin, MI. Tutterow qualified fifth with a 3.719 et @ 204 mph. Tutterow was stellar on the tree all day defeating Todd Martin, Frankie Taylor and Joey Martin. Tutterow paired up against Jason Hamstra in the finals when Tutterow had his worst light of the day .05 to Hamstra's .01 both cars laying down a 3.71 et. Awesome drag race the margin of victory only being .0335 at the stripe.
Tutterow says, "We had good side by side racing every round. We ran consistent low 3.70's every round. I am very pleased with our performance at Martin. It has been a little difficult since I don't have a full crew now but I really appreciate Jim Robbins, Mike Wilson and Mike Personett coming and helping us out this weekend. The whole crew did a great job and Brad worked his butt off."
"I really appreciate all of my sponsors for their continual help this year, I couldn't do it without you. I want to thank KH for all that he has done for us."
(07-11-11) O’FALLON, MO – New doors continue to be opened for Top Sportsman racers in the American Drag Racing League (ADRL).
The world’s premier eighth-mile drag racing league announced on Monday that ADRL sponsor Tim McAmis Performance Parts will be offering a new Top Sportsman No. 1 Qualifier Program.
The low qualifier program will award the top qualifier in Top Sportsman $500 at each of the final five events during the 2011 season.
This exciting incentive will begin at this weekend’s Ford Drive One Summer Drags VII, which is the fifth of ninth stop on the 2011 ADRL Tour and takes place from U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Mich.
"Since the ADRL brought on the Top Sportsman series, we thought it would be fitting for these drivers to have a low qualifier bonus program as well, so Tim McAmis Performance Parts is picking up the low qualifier bonus for the Top Sportsman program for the next five races," Tim McAmis Performance Parts Owner Tim McAmis said.
“We are just as thrilled as the ADRL to see these talented teams performing and we wanted to present another opportunity for them to showcase their talents.”
One of the most popular full-bodied classes in drag racing, Top Sportsman racing continues to grow at a considerable rate in the ADRL.
After four-car and six-car exhibitions were held earlier this year, Top Sportsman was recently named the seventh official class in the ADRL (joining Pro Extreme, Pro Nitrous, Extreme 10.5, Pro Extreme Motorcycle, Extreme Pro Stock and Pro Junior Dragster).
The Top Sportsman class immediately received strong praise and a terrific response from fans and ADRL officials, and the institution of a low qualifier program will now add even more incentive for the talented drivers and teams in the division.
“Since we’ve introduced the Top Sportsman class in the ADRL, we’ve been blown away with the response from the racers and the fans who have enjoyed watching these first-class cars perform at a high level,” ADRL Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing Brian Evans said.
“For Tim McAmis Performance Parts to step up and offer this No. 1 qualifier program, it’s a wonderful thing for this class. Its growth has been remarkable and this program will only add to that.”
7-5-2011)CAYUGA, ON – Round three in the Pro Modified Racing Association, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, and the Pro Bike & Sled Series was completed Sunday, and each of the drag racing series produced new event winners.
The racing took place during the Canadian Nitro Nationals at the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario over the holiday weekend.
Winning his first PMRA race was Kenny Lang. It was also the first PMRA race for the team from Grande Pointe, Manitoba. Lang, driving the Summit Racing Equipment 1969 Camaro, qualified fourth in the field, and bested Derek Hawker of Corbyville, Ontario in his Corvette in the final for the win. Lang recorded a 6.035-second, 239.57-mph winning pass over Hawker.
Semi-finalists for the PMRA race were Bruce Boland of Hamilton, Ontario, and number one qualifier Vito Montesano of Maple, Ontario.
The fourth of six events in the PMRA, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, and the PBSS will be the Stratford Spectacular Hot August Nationals presented by Ideal Supply & NAPA Auto Parts held August 5-7 at the Grand Bend Motorplex in Grand Bend, Ontario.
(06-30-11) Boise, ID - Goodguys Rod & Custom Association President Marc Meadors took the “Pure Hell2” ‘69 Camaro Pro Mod to a runner up finish in the West Coast Outlaw Pro Modified class at the 34th Annual GREAT AMERICAN FOX HUNT presented by Little Caesars Pizza at Firebird Raceway outside Boise, Idaho this past weekend.
Coming off a career best 5.83 test run over Memorial Day weekend, Meadors and the Goodguys Racing Team were fully confident they had what it took to win the race in Boise. Qualifying #3 with a 6.181 @ 234.55 (Low ET during the final qualifying session) only boosted the team’s confidence heading into Saturday evening’s eliminations.
During the opening round of Pro Mod eliminations, Meadors dispatched the 2002 Dodge Viper of Dan Nicholson with a 6.132 @ 236.46. The 236mph blast would stand for top speed of eliminations. Meadors then defeated the ’57 Chevy of nemesis John “Wopadoo” Scialpi with a 6.222 @ 235.78 in the semi’s, setting up a final round race with the 1958 Corvette of Lee Smith.
Unfortunately for Meadors and the Goodguys Racing team, Smith saved his quickest run of eliminations for the final round running a 6.293 @ 228.02 to Meadors’ traction-busting, one and off the throttle 7.735 @ 130.03mph.
“That’s drag racing for ya,” Meadors said after his first final round appearance of the season. “Sometimes the fastest car doesn’t win. My hat is off to Lee and his team for their deserving win. We thought we had a great shot to win it. We were the quicker and faster car but didn’t put the traction down in the money round. The guys and I will learn from this and move on to Medford next week. My hat’s off to the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association, Red Line Oil, Darren Mayer of DMPE, Tim McAmis Race Cars, Andy’s T-Shirts and Ad’s That Work And of course my crew guys for all the hours and all the work they put in.”
Pure Hell2 will join the rest of the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod’s as they compete July 1st and 2nd in the 5th annual “Night of Fire” at Champion Raceway in Medford, Oregon.
